I'm working with DDS Image Sequences for the first time, and image converter seems to crash every time I try to start a batch conversion from a PNG sequence. Is there something I should be doing differently? Are there limitation of the DDS format I may be missing?

I'm running in rev 10349 of MM Standard.

there is a new release 10386 in the dowload center and I saw in the change log that image converter bugs should be fixed.

I use DDS all the time. Its amazing the amount of large image files you can play back at one time. I can say that both of the new image converters in 5.7 release are way slower then the previous at converting. Your resolution needs to be divisible by 4.
