videofile update on timeline from wd...

example:
1 sequence,
3 layers
layer 1 is just background image
layer 2 and 3 are used for show programming...
layer 2 has, over the timeline, multiple intro and outro transitions (which are videofiles...) that repeat multiple times, depending on shoflow, on the timeline.
my goal is to build something with wd,
where i can get the filenames on the layer and where they are (in timeline time...)
i want to create something like a list with that...
and than pick and choose from that list and update it with a new videofile version.
anyone tried to do that?
if it doesn't work with filenames,
maybe with file id's?
