Exporting Objects from Gmax to PB - old & new

Dear all,

having a new PB Exporter for Gmax (downloadable here: ) and a new PB Native Vers. 4.5 File caused some confusion about how to export an object from Gmax to Pandoras Box Vers. 4.1 and Vers. 4.5.

Please have a look at the attached image, I hope this helps to understand how it works.

Hello,

I am a little confused by the process. I have imported the files to the correct location and have found the script under utilities.

Do I export an X file the same way?

Export selected
flightism scenery object
Select Save x file and no compile

Hi Kim,

no, you don´t use the command File--> export selected any more.
When you are under Utilitis - Max scripts, you see on the bottom the Pandoras Box Exporter.

If you now click on the list and choose Pandoras Box exporter again, below the list you will get the export option.

After you clicked Export, a Dialog opens and says that you now should run the Pandoras Box Exporter (PB GMAX X File Exporter.exe) that you downloaded.
Choose a file location and your x-file will be created there.

Hello,

I do not understand what is meant by "Change Plane Size to 16x12 units". I am noticing that the default object fills more than the screen. Could the documentation for this procedure be expanded a bit? A step by step guide would simplify working with this new procedure significantly.

Thank you for your help Julia,

I have found where to export the files from but I am experiencing a couple of errors now.

First is when I boot Gmax, I get a Type Error. It says the following - Call needs function or clues, got:free
Second is when I try to export, I get a runtime error which says - Feature not available, "CreateFile"

Hi,

@Kim:
did you get these error messages since you added the Pandoras Box Exporter? Or also in the time before?
If you didn´t have it before - did you remove some files from the gmax root directory?

@Florian:
I will write a step-by-step guide and also create a new PB Native File for using the Pandoras Box Exporter in the next days. Hopefully this will help to better understand whats happening.. :)

I only started seeing the errors after I added the Pandoras box exporter files to Gmax. I havent deleted any files from the Gmax directory either.

Hi Kim,
to be sure, you just copied the .ms file to Gmax_rootdir/Scripts/startup, and did nothing more?
Which gmax version do you use? Vers. 1.2? If not, please update to this version.

As I right now do not know what could have caused these errors, here two steps I would test out:
1. if you remove the added .ms file from the gmax directory, will also the errors disappear? If yes, maybe some drivers for the exporter are missing. I have to figure out if something special has to be installed on the system.
2. if not - maybe a reinstallation of gmax could help.

Hi Julia,

I removed all of the new files and the error did not appear. I added them back in 1 by 1 and found the error only popped up when the FullscreenExpertOFF.ms file was added. I removed the FullscreenExpertOn.ms file and left the FullscreenExpertOFF.ms in to see if there error was because of a conflict between the two files but the error still showed up. I have not reinstalled the FullscreenExpertOFF.ms file.

We are running version 1.2 of Gmax. I have reinstalled Gmax and I am still receiving the error message - Runtime error: Feature not available: "createFile".

Hi Kim,

now I know what`s wrong!
You downloaded the exporter files for 3ds Max, not for gmax! Please remove all files that you added to your gmax root directory. Download these exporter files (viewtopic.php?f=61&t=497) and follow the instructions. Then it should work :)

Thank you for your help, I have installed the correct files and have had success in exporting the x files.

The link which Patrick posted sends you tot he 3ds x file exporter, which is where I went wrong.
