it mainly depends on the cable length. HDMI or DVI cables longer than 10 meters will not work very well while a RGBHV cable can run up to 50 meters.
The other thing is the EDID communication. HDMI and DVI cables will transmit the display EDID to the grafic card, which will not happen on analog cables. I do prefer not to see the EDID since that sometimes causes strange problems.
