PB and Windows 8

Postby Daniel Kaminski » Tue Aug 20, 2013 2:55 pm

Hi everybody,

Pandoras Box does not officially run on Windows 8.
We know that it works, but at this point we do not offer Support for it or recommand it.

Windows XP Pro 32 and Windows 7 Pro 64 Bit are the only tested and support OS Systems.

One reason why we do not recommand Windows 8 is that the clock is not stable. That will not harm or crash Pandoras Box, but can cause majour sync issues depending on your hardware.

In English - This info seems to all be coming from a release from HWBOT.
http://hwbot.org/news/9824_breaking_win ... _at_hwbot/

More info - according to this article the RTC issue only affects people that do BIOS level overclocking.
http://www.extremetech.com/computing/16 ... proportion

Also, it looks there was a fix for it and it mostly only affects intel processors, not AMD.

Has anyone actually seen sync issues with PB on Win 8?
There are some really interesting advantages to running a Windows 8 laptop as Manager, especially with WD. It would be great to hear from people about their experiences if anyone has gone off the reservation and tried this.

Hi,

I did try.
Problems where with the Open / Save Dialogs. You will have to use light Skin.
Only tried Manager, so no real renderengine Performance tests.

It is ok for trying, but I would not recommend it or trust it for a production yet.
I am sure it will be there at some point of time, but I see no need to change away from Win 7 or XP for Servers.

Hi,
again, not recommended but if anybody needs to run on Win8 for whatever reason, he might run into trouble with the dongle driver. I heard from two customers who downloaded this version and it was cool.

Sentinel HASP/LDK Windows GUI Run-time Installer
Windows , 13.3 MB, Version 6.60, Released 2013-08-08

pS. until the issue with the Open/Save dialog is fixed, you find the "Dark Skin" setting in the Config tab

Gotcha. Thanks! I have gotten WD to work on a Windows 8 tablet. HASP driver works fine. Helps to install PB first to get all the drivers in place. But overall seems to work fine... Please - to anyone reading this - this is an unsupported. We are discussing beta testing essentially. Not show ready stuff.

Interested in this because of the multitude of touch screen laptops available these days for Windows 8 (for use with WD). Also it is getting harder to purchase Windows 7 gear.

Definitely not my favorite version of Windows, but the touchscreen aspect of the laptops is great for WD.

Hi, i'm a new PB operator, nice to meet you all!
Thanks for these iusses! As you explaned it's still not officially supported but do you think that could be a stable choice to run just the offline manager on a window 8.1 tablet like the Dell Venue 11?

Hi,

nice to have you here :-)

Until today we did not test any Win 8 setups, but as some people already mentioned it works quite well on some systems.
I´m unsure if a tablet like the Dell will do the job. That would be something to take a closer look at. From our side we do not have any limitations here so as soon as the tablet offers enough power and a working grafic card there should be no issue.

Please keep always in mind that Wifi is no option to control severs or players. So if you run a manager instead of the offline manager you might see sync issues or jittery videos due to the wifi network.

best regards

Patrick

Hi Patrick,
nice to meet you!
I've successfully installed PB offline on the Dell Venue Pro 11 and it seems to work quite well!
Next days I'll try to do some crash test, maybe also with WD, but at the moment i have to say that it seems to be stable in half to program some offline shows.
I'm interested also in testing this hardware solution also as manager with some real server but, at the moment, i don't have them to test this.. between i have buyed this usb device that could be a good solution for having the RJ port on small pc or tablet pc:
