4k Capture

Postby Tito » Thu Oct 31, 2013 10:45 pm

I will have a show where i will need to capture a signal coming at 4k, it will be a computer output on a Displayport Nvidia Card. I will need this full resolution as the capture will be output to an array of 18 projectors (videomapping on a Cathedral)

is there a capture card that can do this resolution? how else could I achieve this?

regards,
Tito

I'm also seeking any information of any experiences that users out there may have had with capturing 4k inputs,
there are a number of 4k capture cards on the market now (since original post),
Is anyone use them?
Have you experienced any obstacles or issues with 4k capture thru PB?

Regards

Just follow up to this query,

Is anyone successfully using 4k capture cards in PB?

If so what brand/model?

FYI - Blackmagic Instensity Pro 4k does NOT work at 4K,
it does not use Directshow capture filters for any resolutions above 1080p60, therefore isn't seen in PB.

Hi,

coolux is working on a 4k Solution using our Quad HD/3G SDI Input cards.
It will be available in on of the next releases. It is in Testing Phase right now.
You just send the 4k as 4x 3G SDI 1920x1080p60 Quadrants.

How soon do you need it?

I've worked on projects using "4k" over dvi (3840x2400@33hz). This was using generic third part capture cards that support the DirectShow framebuffer interface that coolux uses for processing live inputs. it worked, but is definitely not officially supported by cologne.

HI Flo,

I've purchased a Magewell XI100DE-DVI-4K from China,
http://www.magewell.com/hardware/ultra- ... ml?lang=en

It'll do a number of resolutions (allow though I'm limited in testing sources at present) but it does what I'm after for next job - 3840 x 1080 (@ 30hz) - although the software leaves a little to be desired,
it uses a auto detect for signal & is greyed out which is not allowing for options to change within (that I can find),
I'm using a DVI parrot (EDID emulator) to make it do what I want - I've found a limit of pixel clock @165Mhz but this is more likely to do with DVI dual link limits & DVI parrot limits.

It's obviously not official but is working within Player Pro purpose built machine.

Cheers

Hi,

as I just did research the 4K input for a show I did some tests yesterday.

Setup 1:

Player Pro, custom Hardware, with Coolux Quad HD SDI input card
Image Pro to provide one 1920x1080@25 test pattern with motion
1in4 HD SDI split to send the same image to each input of the quad capture card

Add input one and choose a right click on it to generate a 4K input. This will stich all 4 inputs to one Quad HD canvas and keep them in sync.
As dor my setup it is also required to record that input and play it back instantly I also did test the recording option. All worked well and within sync.

Setup 2:

Same Hardware, but with a Blackmagic 4K extreme capture card. HDMI input.

Worked as well including the recording. The stiching function of the 4 HD SDI inputs does not work on that card, the option is not even there. Maybe this feature is blocked to the Coolux cards only.

Unfortunately the stitching function is not available for 2K, so for the Dual HD SDI input card.

Cheers

Hi everybody,

thank you for sharing your test results Patrick. I bet a couple of people will benefit from these results.

A few technical Background information:
The stitching function is a feature of the actual hardware. I do not know if Blackmagic Hardware also supports this for SDI Inputs. If they do, the direct show driver needs to reveal that option inside the driver configuration window.

What I have heard but not tested myself is that another client had success with a 4k HDMI Capture with a BM Card. The trick was to make all the settings inside the Control Panel Config tool and not to touch the Blackmagic driver settings.

Hi,

maybe I did write it a bit wrong. On the Blackmagick Extreme 4K you can capture and record 3846x2160@25 thru a single HDMI cable. I tested this with a Sony 4K Camera.
In this case Daniel is totally right, do all your configurations inaide the control panel of the capture card and keep the Pandoras Box configuration untouched. Even if you look into the PB configuration and you do not see the right or no input resolution. It will work right away.

Cheers
