Best specs suggestions for server 2015

Postby paulmo_on_tour » Sat Aug 22, 2015 1:01 pm

Hello all,

A "new" "old" coolux guy here. I've got a version 4.7 (ya, a classic there!) and looking to upgrade to version 5.x in the next few weeks.

Looking at the options of what to set up for my system and am finding options for system specs, from 2008. (most likely am really bad at searching the forums!) Any suggestions?

Right now, I know I'm going to load HEAVY on RAM (not doing EEC but am looking at having that as an option later on...), dual SSD for the OS/programme, Might just do a mirror right now for data, but will RAID 1/0 as soon as I can. And as many cores as my wallet can afford!

What are the hot video cards that can and can't handle 4K. I don't see myself needing that at the moment, but if the cost factor isn't that great, I'll set up for 4K early.

The other options I'm already thinking on are: case (racked), air/water cooled (water if the overall cost isn't too great).

What am I missing?

Also, been a LONG time since I loaded up a system, any hints on what I need to have as base files installed on the system. I converted to Mac many years ago, so a bit out of the loop. Am thinking Win 7 since that will most likely be easier to find then XP. I do own an older White (anyone remember those!!??)

The whole exercise of this is to determine if I can at some point soon (end of year soon actually) justify a Quad and another dual server. But first, gotta sell it to both several clients and a fairly major University in Auckland. That goes well, I'll be dropping by Germany to pick up a few systems.

Any thoughts or suggestions? Feel free to contact me off-list if you want.

I'm looking to get this built and sorted by the end of August so I can arrange with the boss (wife) the dosh for a Quad.

Cheers!!

Paul
Sincerely,

Paul Summers

I am pretty sure Servers no longer run on custom hardware. You have to maintain standard hardware from coolux in order to run server licenses.

You should talk to your distributor before spending money on hardware.

Thank you for that, been a long while as I mentioned.

Trying to do a proof of concept before out laying for a proper rig. (which is the end plan for me!)

The "White" came with a rocking P4, with a blistering 1gig of RAM. Haven't looked at upgrading the RAM, not sure if I could even find any (might DDR2).

Will have to have a new thought about that.

Cheers!
Sincerely,

Paul Summers

Hi Paul,

Servers are only available as Hardware / Software combination.
http://www.coolux.de/products/pandorasboxserver/
If you want to build your own Hardware you can do that with Player Software.
http://www.coolux.de/products/pandorasboxplayer/

Here is a PDF to get you up to speed.
http://www.coolux.de/fileadmin/user_upl ... EN_web.pdf

If you are thinking Player with Custom Hardware, here are some general guidelines:

  • current Gen i5, i7 or Xeon CPU (single thread performance is as important as cores!!, a quadcore 3.7 GHz might give you a better performance than hexa 2GHz)
  • NVIDIA GPU GTX 770, GTX 780, GTX 960, GTX970, Quadro 4200 (Stay away from AMD GPUs, unless you know what you are doing!!)
  • SSD (best is a SSD Raid System)
  • 8 GB Ram will be ok

Daniel can you explain why we should stay away from AMD products unless we know what we are doing?

We found out that AMD GPU are not performing as well with Pandoras Box as NVIDIA.
We also had a lot of driver problems in the past (3-4 years ago). That is when we switched to NVIDIA.
Do not get me wrong, every Direct X 9.0c GPU is supported.
We also had quite a few customers having problems especially with DDS Seq on AMD Cards.
At coolux we are not testing AMD Cards at all our Products use NVIDIA GPUs.
