I would simply like to to run my bitmap images in a playlist, fade each to black for 1 second in between, then fade up to the next image etc.
If I put a black image in between each bitmap image and crossfade to it I get a smaller black square appear that lags within the crossfade. It doesn't seem to matter what resolution the black image is.
Is there a way to to do this smoothly?

There is an option in the inspector of the playlist that will let you choose how you'd like Playlist to be displayed.

If you choose "User Defined" you'll be able to choose "Fit Vertical/Horizontal" or "Fit Vertical" and so on.

This should give you the ability to switch between these until you find one that will work for you.
Adversely, you can create a black PNG or JPEG at the same size of your images.
