Quicktime Version 4.5 and above

Postby Oliver Kilian » Fri Oct 30, 2009 5:30 pm

Dear All
From version 4.5 on Pandoras Box is compatible with the latest Apple Quicktime installer.

Even though Quicktime does not always play perfectly on the Windows XP plattform we have improved the compatibility for playback and most important for encoding.

If you wish to use version 4.5 with Quicktime on older machines please uninstall Quicktime Alternative first and then install Quicktime.

Users of version 4.1 and below please keep Quicktime Alternative!

Our Testcenter has tested and approved QT version 7.60.92 and version 7.66.xx which can be downloaded at the Apple webpage: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/

As version 4.5 automatically registers a new Quicktime decoder, you may see unexpected behaviour of quicktime playback in your existing 4.1 installation as soon as you start version 4.5. If you want to roll back the process, please follow these steps:
- uninstall any Quicktime Alternative and Quicktime installation
- reinstall Quicktime Alternative

In the process of installing Quicktime Alternative, the "old" Quicktime Filters are installed and registered, as a result you will have the expected behaviour in version 4.1.

Best regards
The coolux Team!

Just for clarification:

- Do we NEED to install Quicktime on V4.5 or does it work with quicktime alternative as well ?
- If both work on V4.5: What are the advantages / drawbacks for either version ?

Hi Fwieland,

just to clarify this: The new filters used in the 4.5 Software are only compatible with Apple's Quicktime and not with Quicktime Alternative.

Our programmers switched to different filters to improve this compatibility.

Greetings

Does this mean we can use video files with a greater resolution than 1920x1080?

Hi,

we actually did run 4k videos on the LDI show in Orlando last week. But to do so you need to encode the files with our new encoder to an .mxl file.
Please be carefull with 4K videos. The use a lot of ram on the grafic card, so playback of one file is fine, a second one will cause problems already. Using 4k files can overload the grafic card ram and cause the Client to crash without warning.

It is possible to play 4k but we do not oficially support it yet as we just did the first testings and we are just doing our first experiments in the 4k world. But on LDI we were running different clips without big problems.

regards

Patrick

Just out of interest, what does this mean/how does this work? How does the XML file help with the 4k video? What format is the 4k in

Hi Nick,
the files are .mxl files and not xml. (xml was a typo error)
The 4k is in a special MPEG XL Format that our Encoder Extention generates in order to handle the 4k Format for realtime playback.
It has nothing to do with xml files you know and it works similar to other video encoders.

So playback of this file requires the Coolux encoder extension?

No.
To encode a 4k file requires the encoding extention.
Playback requires a MediaServer Dongle with Software Version 4.5.
MediaPlayers can not playback 4k files.

Hi Daniel,

I'm assuming Media Player Pro does not recognise .mxl?

What is the largest file (dimensional) that will play on a Media Player Pro?

Hi Azman,
the PB Player is limited to play back a file resolution of 2560 x 1536 px, while Servers reach up to 4080x4080 px.
