Dome Projection with extra North Pole Projector

Postby Jan Huewel » Fri Aug 29, 2008 4:36 pm

Dear all

more and more people like to do spherical and dome projections at various scales and with different amounts of projectors.

A frequent question that I have followed up on is the fact that by using a extra projector for the top north pole the image quality can be increased quite a lot but causes difficulties on how to do the warping and blending.

Since spherical content is based on a 2:1 image ratio, the example shown here is based on this type of setup.

The concept presented here allows you to use any amount of projectors for the main 360° area and a single projector for the top north pole of a dome.

If you look at the image below, it shows the overlap of 4 projectors plus a 5th one that strechtes a circular image for the north pole.

To archieve the blending for this the 5th output only needs a bottom softedge since is bend in a 360° circle. All four perimter projectors will need to be adjusted on the top softedge individually.

Please be aware that due to the different scaling of a 2:1 layer in projector 5 the y axis scaling and position needs to be adjusted to match the 4 perimeter projectors.

If you have questions or suggestions for other setups let us know.
