How not to go mad with gefen DVI Splitter and devices

Postby Patrick Verhey » Sun Jul 27, 2008 3:44 pm

Hello,

if you are using any gefen equipment, espacially DVI Splitters you need to be very careful in which order you plug everything together. If you don´t do it strikt by the manual you will go mad an loose several hours to find out why your displays are not working.

The main Problem is that some gefen DVI splitters use out 1 for the EDID information, but some are using out 2. And it is also important that you plug in either the monitor or the computer first. And you also need to be careful at what time you plug the power of the splitter in.

Here two examples from the gefen manuals (you can find them on www.gefen.de or www.gefen.com):

FOR THE DVI Splitter 1in2:

CONNECTING AND OPERATING THE DVI SPLITTER
How to Connect the DVI Splitter to your devices
* EDID information is saved in the DVI Splitter from DVI Out 2. In order for the EDID to
be saved properly, DVI Out 2 must be connected fi rst before power is.
1- Connect your main display (monitor or projector) into the 2nd DVI Output.
2- Connect the 5v power supply to the same unit and make sure all power lights turn
red.
3- Connect the rest of your displays (monitors or projectors) into the remaining DVI Out
slots on the back of the DVI Splitter with your DVI cables.
4- Connect your DVI source into DVI Input 1.
5- Turn on your computer only after you've made all the connections.
* Instructions above refer to the base unit on the 1x4 and 1x6 DVI Splitter models.
* Note on the 1x6 the input 1 and output 2 are the middle unit.

FOR THE DVI DL SPLITTER 1in2:

CONNECTING AND OPERATING THE DVI DL SPLITTER
How to Connect the DVI DL Splitter to your devices
1- Connect the supplied Dual Link DVI cable from the back of the computer into the
input of the DVI DL Splitter.
2- Connect the cable from your fi rst display (monitor or projector) into the DVI Out 1 slot
on the DVI DL Splitter. (this will be what the computer will recognize)
3- Connect the cable from your second display (monitor or projector) into the DVI Out 2
slot on the DVI DL Splitter.
4- Plug the 5v power supply into the DVI DL Splitter.
5- Plug the 5v wallmount power supply into the wall outlet.
6- Restart your computer only after you’ve made all the connections.
7- Adjust the EQ to resolve any imperfections in the image.
*Note: Only output #1 of the DVI DL Splitter is HDCP pass-through.

Be sure that you use the right manual for the right splitter. The two splitters look very similar, the only difference is the DL in the name.
