Sound Playback latency with Asio driver sound cards

Postby Oliver Kilian » Fri May 22, 2009 3:20 pm

Dear all,

We just had a client running a Server with a MOTU MK828II USB sound interface. The audio was permanently dragging one second behind the video.

In the configure hardware driver you can change the Samples Per Buffer setting allowing you to reduce the latency. The sound output will be buffered according to the settings. The bigger the buffer is the more latency will be introduced to the sound playback. At the same time the processor load will be reduced.

Reducing the buffer size will minnimize the latency and increase the processor load. Setting the buffer size too small can result in audio drop outs and digital noise.

So please take some time to experiment with the buffer size of your Asio sound card for the best result.

Best regards
Oliver
