Projecting onto a Mercedes B Class

Postby Jan Huewel » Thu Jan 08, 2009 7:10 pm

For a project managed by Hans-Joerg Halbartschlager on behalf of Munich-One http://www.munich-one.com Guido Gesell, Andree Verleger (Art Director) http://www.andree-verleger.com and Uwe Malorny http://www.congaz.de approached coolux to evaluate the possibilities of a projection onto a full sized car for a corporate show.

The setup was a curved back wall and the car.

Before going on the job TLD, resonsible for the technical planing and installation prepared a full test setup to check both the setup time and see the first results of the video files, so that the client could get an idea how the final result would look like.

Right from the beginning it was clear that besides animated images the grafic design Team arrounf Uwe Malorny http://www.congaz.de wanted to be able to project also the reflections of the backwall onto the car as well.

During the test we used a special 3D mapping technique to get the warping done in a very short amount of time, this way the time schedule got down to three nights for fine tuning on location.

A few weeks later the setup was then realized onsite in Beijing in a single night and all other time was well spend on content editing and programming for the show.

Thanks to the great support of the Team of http://www.munich-one.com, TLD this job went very well and had a great impact on the audience.

Hi Jan,

What a beauty this project!
We know what is possible with PB, but this is a nice idea with super result.
Beautiful content, worked out with stunning result.

How many projectors did they use and in what position?

Thanks

Hi

thank you for the feedback.

they used two Projectors for the back wall and two for the car all front-projection.

Best regards

Hallo,

Incredible job! I had a couple of questions.

I am guessing that the client provided the flat mesh and used it to create the content as well. Was the actual warping done in 3D Studio as well or did you export a version of the mesh to use in Gmax?

For the final warping process, did you end up using the flat mesh, adjusting it's orientation to match to projector angle and then tweak it into place with FFDs and vector finetuning? Getting it done in one night is pretty impressive regardless.

Also, looks like the car is an actual vehicle that has been wrapped in some kind of projector-friendly material in a way that fits the contours of the vehicle. Is this the case? What kind of material is it and how was it fitted?

Dear Florian

thank you for your feedback
to answer your questions:
-For informations about the car cover I do not have much information, please contact Munich One or TLD.
-the team from congaz got a 3D model of the car that was optimized to the max layer polygon count of Pandoras Box (64000 polygons)
-this object was then used for both pre-production and warping and rendering in Pandoras Box
-the warping was done with FFD modifiers and two custom mask were created to follow the very curvy blend of the two projectors.

Best regards
Jan
