Combining 2 x 8bit DMX/Artnet channels

Postby PJC » Wed Oct 03, 2012 10:40 am

Hi there,
We're looking at combining 2 x 8bit DMX inputs via Artnet into Widget Designer Pro to move an X position on a layer or effect move.
The DMX signal will comes from a motor control system reading encoders.
The idea of this is to increase the resolution to a 16bit thus 65536 instead of only 256 moves for smother image tracking.

Using a multiply node by a factor of x256 on (Chan 2) and then adding to the (Chan 1) 0-255 values gives us this resolution fine,

For testing purposes, We are starting two WD counters set at 0-255 at the same time in place of the Artnet channels,
We do see a jump in the layer move in a fraction of a second, as the counter clicks over over from 255 to 0 as the (Chan 2 x 256) increases by each block of 256

Are we likely to see this jumping back using actual artnet information? any tips on smoothing/dampening this number other than the obvious nodes?

Thanks,
PJC

Hi PJC,

whenever you are jumping back from 255 to 0, you will move the layer within a specific damping time.
Within you node system there is no damping installed so far, but Pandoras Box has a translation smoothing set for smooth and not jittering images.

By clicking on the server name and having a look in the inspector you will access theses settings within. As default, all movement smoothings are set to 500ms, but you can alter them in the way you need and how it is suitable for you.
Setting the smoothing to zero will lead to exact direct positioning of the layer every time the value changes. Moving layers with DMX or Art-Net may lead to a jittering movement.
