Canvas Draw on top of a jpeg in WD

Hello All!
Is it possible to draw on an image in Widget Designer?

I have been at this for a bit, and not sure what / if there is some sort of option to place a jpeg in the drawing canvas background? Basically, I want to draw over the top of a photo. I've read some posts that talk about Canvas Template Manager, but that looks like it is to be used in conjunction with Pandoras box. A little boggled here. Thanks for any help!!

Could it not just work by you putting the drawing on the layer under the canvas?

another option is to use one of the compositing effects to merge two images on one layer.
