New Key + Fill Effect with Rev. 3148!

Postby Julia Foest » Fri Apr 24, 2009 1:16 pm

Dear all,

up from the new Rev. 3148 you can use a mask to get a key and fill effect : Layer A is supposed to be mixed with Layer B with a Mask in between that benefits from all sizing, positioning and rotation features in 2D and 3D at full 16bit control resolution.
The mask can be anything from a still image to a full size 1920x1080 HD clips.

The way we the solution is setup is pretty much the traditional KEY+FILL technique in Video Mixers or Blendmodes in Photoshop based on the layer stack from bottom to top.
In Pandora this can be translated from back to front, as the back layer is being rendered first and every other layer is rendered on to of the previous one. By making use of this technique every layer can make use of the alpha blend modes to define how its pixel RGB+Alpha (RGB32) values are mixed with the previous rendered images.

To explain this in pictures see the following Tutorial:

STEP1: Use Layer 1 that is the Background Video/Image

STEP2 Assign a Mask, Black&White image to Layer 2

STEP3 The White needs to be keyed in order to get alpha information into the Mask, alternative is to use a tga or png with as black&alpha image, then you do not need to apply the key here and you can continue with STEP4
CFX White Key
C1(Amount): 255
C2(Threshold): 255
C3(Feather):255
Later you may adjust how you want to apply the mask by setting the values for threshold and amount and feather

STEP4 Apply a Blend Mode to Layer2 that mixes the alpha portion of the Mask pixels(Layer2) with the Background (Layer1)
VFX: Alpha Blend
FX1: 1
FX2: 1 (Revised! 0 was wrong.)
FX3: 5

STEP5 Assign a Video/Image to the top Layer 3

STEP6 Apply a Blend Mode to Layer 3 to mix it with the Alpha Portion of the Background (mix of Layer1+2)
VFX: Alpha Blend
FX1: 1
FX2: 8
FX3: 5

Example of the composition when viewed from a perspective angle:

With this setup all 3 Layers can be positioned sized and orientated freely in xyz, if additional colour effects are needed these can still be applied to the background & foreground layer( Layer 1+3).

Please note:
When alpha blend modes are use the opacity ranges are from 1-255, a zero value switches off the layer to be rendered, and therefore switches the mode back to default opacity mixing.

This added feature enables the blend modes of a Layer to operate on the Alpha portion of their background layers, therefore we had to make only a minor change in the colourspace settings of the texture renderer, this effect works in all camera modes except mode 50, that displays only the 24bit RGB output buffer.

Some graphicscards can´t show this effect (e.g. when you are using the media manager on another laptop). Although in this case you won´t see the key and fill effect in the preview, it works correct on the V4 and V3 servers!

Dear All

after playing with this effect for a while with timeline programming I noticed that the best way to fade the Key+Fill together is by fading the Colour FX1 (intesity of the mask key) to crossfade both mask and fill in and out.

Revised blend modes:

STEP4 Apply a Blend Mode to Layer2 that mixes the alpha portion of the Mask pixels(Layer2) with the Background (Layer1)
VFX: Alpha Blend
FX1: 1
FX2: 1 (Revised! 0 was wrong.)
FX3: 5
