MPEG2/.MXL Encoding 4080x4080

Postby krodrigues » Fri Aug 24, 2018 11:29 pm

Hi All,

Ok so myself and another co-worker have had great success with our 360" sim cave for static imagery, but Video is a whole different ball game.

We are running 3 Pandora Box Players with a total of 9 outputs @ 1920x1200 resolution.

Any encoder type except MPEG2 runs horribly skips the whole way. But if we push MPEG2 we get a nice smooth image, so thats fine. We decided to work with MPEG2, however our content for proper perspective correction, we have built a 3D model in Maya and we re-render our content through that to perfectly match our room dimensions, as we do not have the Pandora Server. so no Z plane.

Long story short we have to take whatever video is produced, convert that to an image sequence, then pipe that sequence through maya, render at 4096x4096 and then convert again to a video a type, in this case MPEG2. But because MPEG2 has a limitation of 1088x1088, we lose a massive amount of resolution. the video plays great on Pandora but doesnt look so hot.

So we started reading and found that there is a proprietry coolux format called .MXL (MPEG EXTRA LARGE) Fantastic !! we thought lol.. basically going back to above we encode to .AVI or .MOV and then let pandora encode to .MXL, but no matter what we do .. when it is done encoding, we only get a black screen ..

This is where we are stuck ? what are we doing wrong ? what advice to people have ?

At the end of the day we have a 4096x4096 rendered video through our pipeline and we want it to play smooth on the pandora players. From what we can tell no format runs 30fps smooth except MPEG2 but that has resolution caps.

HELP ! :D

Hello!

I believe that the cool kids use HAP these days (good performance on SSDs, slight compression). Alternatively you can use dds image sequences (which are pretty much the same as HAP, just a different workflow).
If you require lossless PNG and BMP are options, but I'm not sure about performance limitations. If you're going 30fps it may work out.

Dennis

(btw. why not 60fps?)

Hi,

mxl is limited to 4080x2800px. So 4080x4080 wil not work. Sorry.

What kind of Hardware are you using. HAP / DDS Codec is normally a great solution if you have SSDs.
